Tapping a tree is a commitment, a promise. Once you drill that small hole and place the spile (or tap) in the tree you feel a responsibility to the tree to not let it's contribution go to waste. Going from 3 taps last year to 77 taps this year is a big job. All that sap needs to be collected, stored (for not too long) and boiled down to syrup. Sometimes you just need to get started, get tapping and figure everything out along the way.
